Be AI-gile: The Book
By Josh Yavelberg, PhD
A book about the gap between the competence that got you here and the competence your situation now demands — and how to close it on purpose, rather than by panic.
AI widens the gap between what you were trained to do and what your situation now demands — and, handled well, it can also help you cross it. This isn't, first and last, a book about artificial intelligence, though AI runs through every page. It's a book about that gap, and how ordinary people are closing it on purpose.
The person who only learns the buttons stays hostage to the current interface. The person who learns underlying principles can meet whatever comes.
Six Stories. One Shape Underneath.
The book follows six narratives, each finding a way past the edge of what they were trained for — with real stakes, and no option to pause the world and go get qualified first. Four rooms, five people, carry the book from the opening pages, across a classroom, a nonprofit, a company, and a family kitchen. A fifth, fictional narrative, Alex, arrives later in Part III, as the practice scales into a five-hundred-person organization. The sixth is the author's own — a real, first-hand account woven throughout the book, showing how the framework itself came together.
Elena
Promoted for her gift with people, now facing a financial model she didn't build and a strategic plan she's expected to own — while a vendor promises AI will transform an operation she's still learning to run.
David
Holding a team together as institutional knowledge walks out the door, client expectations climb, and a budget tightens around him — while everyone assumes AI has made the work cheap.
Jordan
An eleventh-grade teacher watching a trusted assignment become something a tool can finish in seconds — and asking which struggles are the ones that actually build understanding.
Priya & Marcus
Parents at the kitchen table, improvising through a parenting question neither was trained for, with contradictory advice from every direction and no break from the decision.
Alex
Hired into a title that would have sounded invented a few years earlier — something like AI enablement lead, or head of AI transformation — at an organization past five hundred people and still growing. There's a title, a mandate, and almost nothing else: no established practice, no department that's done this before, no manual for what the job actually requires once the first week ends.
The Author
Not a fictional room, but a real one: Josh Yavelberg's own account, woven throughout the book alongside the cast — showing where the framework's ideas came from, and how they were built and tested in practice.
AI is never a substitute for human expertise.
What it can do is narrower, humbler, and genuinely powerful: help you arrive at better questions, make progress visible when you're too close to see it, and serve as a thinking partner for the small moves that let you learn your way forward when no expert can hand you the whole answer.
The Mirror and the Compass
A more powerful mirror doesn't reduce the need for a compass — it increases it. The more capable the tool, the more human judgment matters, not less. That compass is never in the tool. It's in you.
Three Parts
Part I — The Human Stakes
Why this moment gets inside us, what "AI" actually is beneath the label, and what it means to work with a system that has no stake in what its output is for.
Part II — The Practice
The Be AI-gile framework in full: the ideas beneath it, and each of the four tenets taken up on its own — examined, tested, and put into practice with the cast.
Part III — Scaling the Practice
From personal practice to shared practice to an organization — told through Alex's story, as a five-hundred-person organization takes up the practice. How the same shape holds from a kitchen table to a boardroom.
